PRIVATE HOUSEBOAT, ST KATHARINE DOCKS

Saved from scrap. Reborn as a home.

This boat was headed for the scrapyard until its owner stepped in with a different plan: save as much of the original structure as possible, and give it a complete modern upgrade underneath. Nowhere was that balance harder to strike than the ceiling — painstakingly restored, and in the process leaving punishingly tight constraints for anything that needed to be built into it.

The brief to LumiAdd reflected exactly that challenge: downlights shallow enough to fit within the restored ceiling's limited depth, across multiple cut-out sizes, with excellent glare control and a genuinely architectural look — satin black reflectors, white trim colour-matched to the ceiling — running natively from the boat's own low-voltage power supply. Nothing on the market met the brief as written, so LumiAdd designed and produced the fixtures from scratch to fit it exactly.

The finished boat now runs on a wireless Zigbee control system, letting every light be operated remotely — guests arrive to a pre-set scene already waiting for them. Moored at St Katharine Docks, the only marina in Central London, it's now a striking modern houseboat and a popular Airbnb stay, with LumiAdd's lighting playing a quiet but essential part in that first impression.
